The Best Things to Do in Washington D.C.

May 25, 2016 | Jennifer Goodwyn

. . . .

In the past few years, Washington D.C. has grown to be more than just the capital of the United States. It becomes a cosmopolitan hub of business, food, art, and culture. Since there's more to D.C. than the museums and the White House, exploring Washington D.C. should be on your bucket list if isn't already. Working here is also always a pleasure! Locals know the city best, so here are some of their favorite spots.

1.       Smithsonian Museums and Zoo

It may sound touristy, but the Smithsonian museums are never anything less than mind blowing, and there is always more to see and do. With nineteen museums and galleries, plus the National Zoo, you could spend days just at the Smithsonian. From art to the Natural History Museum, to the Air and Space Museum, there is something for everyone. If you are an architecture fan, just looking at the gorgeous construction of the structures is something else. Any time of the year, a walk on the National Mall with coffee is a perfect way to spend the day. The best thing? You'll learn something new every time you walk into a Smithsonian museum.

2.       Newseum

555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

Washington D.C., 20001

(202) 292-6100

If you've visited all of the Smithsonian and are still hungry for more museums, Newseum is for you. If you've found that the Smithsonian is not your thing, the Newseum is still for you. Newseum covers the history of news and more modern topics in a way that's entirely different from that of a traditional museum. With multimedia and interactive displays, the content is dynamic and engaging. Exhibits at Newseum are constantly changing to stay up-to-date, so there is always something new to see and do.

3.       Founding Farmers DC

It has a pun in the title, and farmers own it, what else could you want from a restaurant? Its dedication to fresh, delicious food sets Founding Farmers apart from other restaurants. Starting with brunch, this spot serves comfort food inspired meals throughout the day. You have to try their stuffed French toast, beignets, and their bacon upgrades, which are two of the best words ever. If you are in the area for lunch or dinner, do not miss out on their chicken and waffles, butternut squash mascarpone ravioli, or, for a little bit of everything, the farmhouse platter. This elevated comfort food spot is a real gem of Washington D.C.

4.       Smith Commons

1245 H St. NE

Washington, DC 20002

(202) 396-0038

D.C. knows its drinks, so of course there are going to be a thousand great bars in the city. However, Smith Commons is a real standout. From half-price wine Wednesdays to their Smith Commons mojito with Reserva rum, champagne, fresh lime juice with mint, and simple syrup they have something for everyone. If you get hungry during your night out or get thirsty during lunch, Smith Commons also has full brunch, lunch, and dinner menus with delicious options.

Whether you are working in D.C. or debating a move, there's always something to do in the District of Columbia. Moreover, hey, you never know if your next drink is going to be next to one of the United States' Senators!
